Ms. Ashford welcomed new and returning SIC members. Everyone in attendance introduced themselves. Ms. Ashford said she is ready to start improving the school and moving forward.
II. SIC Nominations
Ms. Jeffords is the new SIC Vice-Chair and Ms. Yow will be the Secretary.
III. Parent Outreach / Membership
We need more parent volunteers on the SIC and more visibility for the SIC. Ms. Ashford said she would advertise on the blog. Ms. Preudhomme stated she has asked a parent to join the SIC. Dr. Hamlin will see if she can find a Latino parent who is interested. The PTO president said she knew of an interested parent Andre Brown who would be very good for the SIC.
II. Old Business / New Business
The student survey administered to students last school year was briefly discussed by Ms. Yow and Dr. Brown. Ms. Ashford said the results should be presented at an admin team meeting. Any Monday at 8 AM would be good. Dr. Brown also said the students need to know the results. Ms. Ashford said that prior to the AdvanceED survey would be good time to provide a summary of the results to students. Ms. Ashford also discussed the Diamond Scholars Academy, a designation for Dent students not in FAME, TLC, or TWO Academies. Harry Miley is looking into giving Dent money for students, possibly for a field study. The window for the magnets opens in January. The group discussed possibilities for allowing Diamond Scholars students to have special consideration.
Ms. Ashford stated they were having turnover in custodians but she thought things were beginning to settle down. She is working on the soap in the bathrooms. Additionally, enrichment and PE are built into each day. Every student has a 10-minute window for recess. Diamond Enrichment is 20 minutes every day for study skills, organization, etc. The school administration provides enrichment activities so teachers don’t have to plan that time.
The PTO President said they were looking to expand participation in the PTO. The district doesn’t want them bombarding parents with phone messages so they are looking for emails.
